INDIA-JAPAN RELATIONS

INDIA-JAPAN RELATIONS

India and Japan share a global vision of peace, stability and shared prosperity, based on sustainable development.

ANCIENT TIME

Relations between India and Japan are traced back to ancient times. India shared a cultural relationship with Japan since 752 A.D. when Indian monk Bodhisena visited Japan. The Tamil Buddhist scholar established the Kegon School of Chinese Buddhism.

Indian influence on Japanese culture is such that 47 characters of Japanese scripts are considered to be devised after the Sanskrit alphabet pattern.

CONTEMPORARY TIME

In contemporary times Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Swami Vivekananda, JRD Tata, and Rabindranath Tagore also share a relationship with Japan. The relationship between both countries tremendously widened in a strategic manner. India and Japan witnessed good economic and people-to-people contact.

India established a diplomatic relationship with Japan in April 1952 and the year 2022 marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations to commemorate this, a number of events till December 2022 are organised in Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram.

INDIA-JAPAN INVOLVEMENT

India and Japan are at the strongest point of their relationship. India and Japan have a number of collaborations. Some important collaborations are:

  • Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project. this bullet train is an important endeavour to build a new India.

  • Manufacturing plants of Maruti Suzuki: recently Japan proposed to built-in Sonipat's Kharkhoda (Industrial Model Township) which will generate 13000 direct jobs.

  • Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP): To support India in the health care segment, Japan signed agreements; and projects are funded under the (GGP) scheme which is designed to make available the basic human needs of the residents of developing countries.

  • Quad: An informal strategic dialogue between India, the USA, Japan and Australia with a shared objective regarding the indo-pacific region; that is to ensure and support a “free, open and prosperous” region which ultimately going to affect trade.

  • Security and defence dialogue: One of the most effective frameworks between Japan and India includes the “2+2” meeting, apart from the annual Defence Ministerial Dialogue and Coast Guard-to-Coast Guard dialogue.

WAY FORWARD

In defence and Security partnership, India-Japan has evolved over the years. Its significance is growing because of the common outlook on issues of peace, security and stability in the Indo-Pacific Region.

Two countries come together because of common or shared interests, and so do India and Japan especially when foreign policy is concerned. To strengthen their position in the global community Japan and India cultivate and maintain their relationships with other countries too.

Close cooperation is advantageous for both countries to tackle hostile neighbours like China as well. India and Japan could deepen their relationship more to utilise each other's resources for their profit. One such example is the presence of technology in japan and the presence of a labour force in India could complement each other to grow in this competitive world.
