MOONLIGHT IN INDIA
In September 2022, Wipro removed its 300 employees for the reason of Moonlight. This Moonlight term might be new for a few but a higher possibility exist that many of our readers might be moonlighting. To avoid any kind of problems ahead it is better to understand this in little depth.
WHAT IS MOONLIGHT
Moonlight is a practice where a person takes a secondary job or side job while being on the payroll of another company and works for both the company. Moonlighting is not new in India, the trend accelerated during covid when people started working from home. This nature of working remotely provided employees time and the ability to do multiple things.
Moonlighting provides:
- Financial stability in an uncertain job market
- Creative satisfaction for people not able to follow their hobby or passion.
WHY DO PEOPLE TEND TO MOONLIGHT
Moonlight or working in two jobs is a side hustle that allows individuals to explore options and build their career choices. Common side gigs involve affiliate marketing, painting, graphic designing etc, that allow people to earn beyond what their main job pays them. In the case of moonlighting people are role-switching not in search of another main job but to learn different skills and perform in different fields which gives them happiness and money hand in hand.
WHY MOONLIGHTING IS A PROBLEM
Few I.T. giants issued strong warnings to their employees in India against moonlighting. This is so as because of the following reasons:
- Affects productivity- Sometimes it is found that employees show up to work all tired and do not contribute to work as expected affecting productivity
- Steal information- If individual works in both companies in the same field they may steal information from one company and may aid to competitor’s firm.
- Prioritization- Employees might prioritise one of the jobs and will not keep both jobs at par.
WAY FORWARD
Moonlighting should be practised being ethical and for good reasons as:
- Maintain competence
- Learn new skills
- Follow hobby, boost passion
- Avoid disengagement
To avoid any confusion to employees, employers should mention their stand on moonlighting on contract. If a company allows its employees to Moonlight, then the company should also mention in what kind of work employees could get engaged. Clarity should be starting from working in companies in the same field to teaching in private coaching institutes. There should be no greys for any kinds of employees working in the private sector of PSU or the government sector.
